So what about this new Galactica? Before I committed myself to watching these series, I bought the original one and kicked myself through it. I am in the right generation for it, and have the love for sci fi, but never came around to watching these series in the old days. So I did before I started the new one and I can understand that the differences between the two are too large to overcome for the fans. But hey, it is almost 30 years later and the writers were obviously planning in writing something different then the usual sci fi stuff. And they did! Battlestar Galactica is in my opinion the best sci fi available yet and I have seen a lot of sci fi in these 30 years. I loved the Star Treks and all the other sci fi standards, but in my opinion, for every decade there is a format for sci fi and in this one, this is it! The days of a series with goofy looking aliens, single story episodes and nice and shiny ships are over. Well, there maybe not over, but they don't draw the amount of attention that they did anymore (see the cancellation of Star Trek Enterprise). So what does? Started upa daring project of the sci fi channel, the 3 hours mini series was a hit in 2003. It lifted you straight into the BG of the next millennium and with excellent story lines, nice special effects and good acting.So thank the gods for transforming the mini series into a first season. And a second.And a third. All the seasons are well written and from the start they were drenched in thick red story telling lines. After you finished one episode, you want to see the next. OK, you will ask yourself, but where does the path change from the standard sci fi series? Well, didn't it just do so? A sci fi series with a story that generally develops over the seasons is somewhat new isn't it? No single story episodes (at least very few) and the emphasis on character development, political development and the development of the speciesa whole. And not even one species, but two. Are the bad guys (the cylons) really the bad guys? Or are they, justthe human race, in search of their identity? When you see these striking themes through the layer of raw interaction in which it is presented, with excellent, award winning special effects and excellent sound, you'll know that the sci fi theme has just lifted itself up a notch in the world of successful series. <br/><br/>See these series if you want a story to be told. If you want to think grey instead of black and white. This is a series about races, not a series about warfare in my opinion. Although they are at war and there are some nice battles to be fought, action is not the epic centre on which this series shakes your sci fi feet underneath you. It is a complete universal story about the near extinction of the human race and is covered in all perspectives. It is an excellent series and one of my favorites.
